Leroy Sane scored either side of the break as Manchester City came from behind to win beat Hoffenheim 2-1 in their final Champions Leaguematch – and top Group F as a result.After Aymeric Laporte had hauled down Benjamin Hubner, Hoffenheim were awarded a penalty and Andrej Kramaric waited for Ederson to go the wrong way before slotting it in.

There was almost an immediate response from City, but Gabriel Jesus, in for the absent Sergio Aguero, could only direct his header from eight yards onto the post.City continued to dominate and were again denied by the woodwork.This time Nicloas Otamendi flicked a Ilkay Gundogan cross onto the crossbar.It looked as if City had wasted their chance to equalise, but in first-half stoppage time, Sane produced a moment of brilliance when he struck a dipping effort from 30 yards beyond Oliver Baumann.

After the break, Pep Guardiola was left with his head in his hands as he tried to work out how his team were not in front.Laporte drew a double save from Baumann following a corner early in the second half.His attempts would not have counted as Sane’s cross was ruled to have gone out of play but City were in the ascendancy.Then, a superb counter attack, led by Raheem Sterling saw him power forward without a Hoffenheim player in sight, before playing in Sane who then found Bernado Silva, but he failed to provide the finishing touch.

Sane and City had their second just after the hour mark. Sterling was again involved and passed to the German who took a touch and this time he made no mistake.City went in search of more and Phil Foden began to grow in confidence.Both he and Sane shot over before Foden met a Sterling cross with a powerful left-foot volley that Baumann tipped over, but City had done enough to get the victory.

Sane was the hero for Manchester City on a night where they could and should have had more than two goals.His equalising free-kick was one Cristiano Ronaldo would have been proud of, as it dipped and swerved into the net.The German’s second goal was far more straightforward – but proved to be the decisive goal.

How it could be anything other than that set-piece from Sane.While it is cliche to say it was in as soon as it left his boot, truer words could not have been spoken more in this case, as he gave Baumann absolutely no chance with his first of the night.
